A native Community Ratings & Micro-Reviews system into Netflix’s established Smart TV ecosystem
ROLE: PRODUCT DESIGNER
TIMELINE: 2 WEEKS
OVERVIEW
Add a new feature to an existing product—specifically introducing a native Community Ratings & Micro-Reviews system into Netflix’s established Smart TV ecosystem without complicating its iconic, low-friction interface.
PROBLEM
Netflix subscribers experience decision fatigue and choice paralysis due to reliance on opaque match percentages.
SOLUTION
An in-app feature that allows subscribers to view ratings, read user comments, and leave their own reviews directly within the platform.
CONTEXT
Viewers frequently experience friction and decision fatigue when choosing what to watch, often exiting Netflix to consult external platforms like Rotten Tomatoes or Letterboxd for user reviews and ratings.
To eliminate this drop-off and streamline the discovery process, this project introduces an in-app community rating and review feature.
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
Users satisfy their need for content validation, catalog navigation, and post-watch commentary across a variety of digital touchpoints.
Gen Z & Young Millennials (18–34)
Solves the Identity & Community problem ("I want to share my movie taste and see what my friends think").
Strengths
Massive cultural clout with Gen Z.
Highly aesthetic, joke-friendly UI.
Strong community trust & curation.
Weaknesses
No direct streaming integration (must open external apps).
Broad Mainstream Global Audience (25–54)
Solves the Information & Verification problem ("Who played that actor, and is this movie universally respected?").
Strengths
Unmatched SEO and global brand recognition.
Comprehensive database for both TV and film.
Weaknesses
Low social engagement (feels like reading Wikipedia).
General Decision-Makers (25–54)
Solves the Speedy Quality Filtering problem ("Give me a quick percentage so I don't waste 2 hours").
Strengths
Instant visual trust signal (Fresh vs. Rotten).
Weaknesses
Minimal social/community interaction.

GOALS
PAIN POINTS
Explore connected metadata seamlessly post-watch.
Read and share micro-reviews within a community.
Track and log their viewing history across film and episodic TV.
Netflix’s match percentage algorithms feeling opaque or inaccurate.
Lack of a central hub on streaming platforms to discuss TV series or season finales.
Disconnected experiences between watching a movie and external apps.
SOLUTION
Netflix subscribers experience decision fatigue and choice paralysis due to reliance on opaque match percentages.
Zero-Friction Decision Making
1-tap star ratings and crowd consensus badges embedded directly on title cards.
Seamless Post-Watch Community
Post-credits micro-reviews give viewers instant connection and discussion space at peak emotional engagement.
Cross-Device Input
Smart TV view allows instant 1-tap feedback while pushing optional mobile notifications for typing detailed reviews.
Solving this retains user attention inside the ecosystem, converts passive scroll time into active streaming hours, and captures authentic first-party subscriber sentiment.
WIREFRAMING: LOW FIDELITY
USER TESTING
To evaluate the core structure, flow, and feature clarity before moving to visual design, we conducted 1-on-1 usability testing sessions with 5 participants using interactive low-fidelity wireframes.
KEYPOINTS
80%
High Navigation Friction
4 out of 5 participants (80%) explicitly stated that hiding community reviews behind a secondary sub-page or dedicated rating screen adds unnecessary clicks.
80%
High Demand for "Quick Reviews"
4 out of 5 participants (80%) favored the Quick Review concept, confirming prior research that subscribers prefer micro-interactions (1-tap tags/stars) over typing text on a TV interface.
